Parts of this state highway in Tacoma to close overnight later this week

A portion of State Route 509 in Tacoma will close overnight from Thursday, Nov. 6 to Friday, Nov. 7.

The closure will be in place on a section of the highway that passes through the Tideflats, from Alexander Avenue East and Taylor Way, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation. The closure will begin at 8 p.m. on Nov. 6, and all lanes will be closed by 11:59 p.m. that night. One lane in each direction will start to open by 4 a.m. on Nov. 7, and all lanes will be open by 5 a.m., according to a release from WSDOT.

The closure will remain in place as crews install permanent utility lines across the highway.

“Drivers will follow a signed detour route,” the release states. “People are encouraged to plan ahead, make alternative plans and use caution while following the signed detour.”

The closure is part of WSDOT’s State Route 167 completion project, which will build six miles of tolled highway between Puyallup and the Port of Tacoma through a multi-stage effort by 2030. The SR-167 completion project is part of the department’s Puget Sound Gateway Program, which seeks to complete missing links in the state’s highway and freight network. The Puget Sound Gateway Program has $2.83 billion in funding from a variety of sources, including tolls, local contributions, federal grants and state dollars.
