‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Season 2 finds its Red Widow and two major new knights

It seems that Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his loyal squire Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell) are going to be facing down some quite impressive new characters in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2.

HBO revealed today on Instagram that Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody, Sing Street), Babou Ceesay (Alien: Earth, Wolfe), and Peter Mullan (Westworld, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power) have been cast in major roles for the second season of the hit Game of Thrones prequel series.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 will adapt George R.R. Martin‘s second “Dunk and Egg” novella, “The Sworn Sword.” The story, which takes place a year or two after the events of Season 1’s Tourney at Ashford, sees Dunk working as a, you guessed it, “sworn sword” to Ser Eustace Osgrey of Standfast. One day, Ser Duncan and Egg return to Standfast to discover their stream has dried up in the midst of a dangerous drought. When Ser Duncan and another of Ser Eustace’s sworn swords, Ser Bennis, investigate, they discover that neighboring noblewoman Lady Rohanne Webber has instructed her men to build a dam diverting Standfast’s stream to her castle’s moat. Ser Bennis attacks one of Lady Rohanne’s laborers, kicking off a tense feud between the rival houses. Adding to the drama? Lady Rohanne is known to the smallfolk as a murderous witch known as the “Red Widow.”

When DECIDER spoke to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms showrunner Ira Parker, he was eager to tease the Red Widow’s role in Season 2.

“Look, at the moment, magic is at an all-time low. It’s not that it’s totally gone from this world. It’s just at its least powerful in these realms,” Parker said. “Obviously you get into Season 2 and it plays a little bit more of a role because we talk about the Red Widow and whether or not she actually has blood magic.”

Lucy Boynton will play Lady Rohanne Webber — aka the Red Widow — a truly formidable and beguiling character in George R.R. Martin’s already-stuffed pantheon of formidable and beguiling women. Alien: Earth standout Babou Ceesay will bring his trademark intensity to Ser Bennis and the legendary Peter Mullan will play Ser Eustace Osgrey, a man haunted by multiple losses suffered during the Blackfyre Rebellion.

It’s already been confirmed that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 will once again be six half-hour episodes and that HBO expects the second season to premiere sometime in 2027.

All six episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 are streaming on HBO Max.
