Aaron Thomas avoids prison time. How a judge sentenced the former North Kingstown coach

Aaron Thomas, the former North Kingstown High School coach accused of inappropriate contact with students, will not serve any prison time, a judge ruled Monday, Sept. 22.

Superior Court Judge Melanie Wilk Thunburg sentenced Thomas to one year of probation.

Thomas was convicted of two counts of misdemeanor battery at trial in the spring, but found not guilty of second-degree sexual assault and child molestation.

The sentencing brings to an end the criminal prosecution of Thomas, which triggered a reckoning in North Kingstown, although there are civil lawsuits still pending against school officials.

Prosecutors charged Thomas in July 2022 and argued in court that for decades, he had invited teenage male athletes to strip naked while alone with him during body composition testing.
