The couple’s getaway comes amid news of a lawsuit filed by a former employee of the University of North Carolina, which alleges that Belichick was illegally hired by the university for the football team’s head coaching position.
The suit, obtained by PEOPLE, was filed by former UNC administrator Chris Clemens on Monday, Sept. 22, in Orange County Superior Court. It claims that Belichick’s hire in December is one of three instances of the university’s board of trustees’ “pattern and practice” of keeping “matters of grave public concern behind closed doors.”

In addition to his claims about the board of trustees’ “pattern and practice” of keeping such matters behind closed doors, Clemens is alleging that the university “approved the hire” of Belichick during an illegal closed meeting, violating North Carolina’s laws of open meetings and public records for the public university.
“Nothing Plaintiff communicated to deans about the Board’s policy posture could constitute disclosure of confidential closed session information,” the filing states.
The former provost also claims the university penalized him for “leaking closed-session information” and pointed to two additional instances of illegal closed-door meetings since 2023.

Clemens claims the board of trustees held a closed session regarding their partnership with the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in November 2023, to discuss “potential financial outcomes with SEC or Big Ten membership,” per the filing.
The former university administrator alleges that in May 2024, the board reconvened on the topic, discussing finances for the athletics department in another closed session.
Clemens also claims in his suit that school dean Jed Atkins was using the messaging app Signal, known for end-to-end encryption for messages and calls and disappearing messages, to communicate with members of the board.
