Is the gang spry enough for another heist?
George Clooney, 64, weighed in on the status of the “Ocean’s” movie franchise, which began with “Ocean’s Eleven” in 2001.
“There was something about the idea that we’re too old to do what we used to do, but we’re still smart enough to know how to get away with something, that just appeals to me,” Clooney told Variety on Tuesday.
Ages aside, there is an “Ocean’s 14” movie coming, and filming is expected to start in 2026.
“We just got the budget approved at Warner Bros. and we’re trying to set up,” Clooney told E! News in October. “It’s just scheduling, so it’s just setting a start date for us … probably start in about nine or 10 months, shooting.”
The heist franchise started with “Ocean’s Eleven,” in 2001, which was a remake of the 1960 movie starring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr.
Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the 2001 movie starred Clooney, Brat Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, and Julia Roberts.
It was followed by “Ocean’s Twelve” in 2004, and “Ocean’s Thirteen” in 2007.
In 2018, there was also an “Ocean’s 8” starring Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, and Rihanna. Clooney did not appear in it.
Roberts, Pitt, Damon, and Cheadle will reportedly reprise their roles along with Clooney in “Ocean’s 14.”
The aging crew has “lost a step” in the new movie, “And they need to find a way to work around their limitations,” he told Variety.
“Ocean’s 14” wouldn’t be the first movie of its kind to feature middle-aged or older characters returning for an action movie past their glory days, as Harrison Ford also did that in 2008’s “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” and 2023’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.”
Liam Neeson has also perfected the art of being an action movie star in his ‘70s.
According to People, the upcoming “Ocean’s 14” will also draw inspiration from the 1979 movie “Going in Style,” which followed a group of older criminals, starring George Burns and Lee Strasberg. That movie also got a 2017 remake starring Alan Arkin and Michael Caine.
Margot Robbie is also set to star in a prequel film.
“Ocean’s 14” does not yet have a premiere date.
