A second security alert is continuing in Craigavon, County Armagh, after the discovery of suspicious devices on Monday evening.
The second alert was declared in the early hours of Tuesday morning in Aldervale.
Cordons are in place on the Tullygalley Road. Police have asked the public to avoid the area and police remain at the scene.
A man has been arrested and remains in police custody.
A number of residents had to spend the night in a GAA club after their homes were evacuated in nearby Pinebank on Monday evening after a suspicious object was found.
The public has also been asked to avoid that area and cordons are in place.
Sinn Féin councillor Jude Mallon said: “Due to the ongoing security alert in Pinebank, many residents have been forced to evacuate their homes.
“I want to commend the local GAA club, Éire Óg, and Brownlow Hub, who have opened their facilities to support those affected.”
‘Wide cordon and helicopter circling’
In Craigavon the cordon is wide – stretching from inside the Pinebank estate through to Aldervale which is now mostly parkland.
A helicopter is regularly circling above and there is a strong police presence right around the cordon. Inside the cordon an Army robot is on site.
Somewhat jarringly the cheerful sound of children playing in a nearby school playground can also be heard.
Some schoolchildren won’t be at school today though – having been put out of their homes they spent the night in the local GAA club.
Éire Óg chairman Fergal Connolly said some residents were still at the club [BBC]
Éire Óg chairman Fergal Connolly said about a dozen families and more than 20 people in total spent the night there.
“A number are still here. A number of residents also slept in their cars and came in here to use the toilets,” he said.
“There were around a dozen volunteers here as well supporting with blankets, food, tea and coffee, snacks and the Golden Crust bakery in Lurgan provided food for breakfast.
“We are still waiting for the all clear. We’ve been here since 10:30 last night and there was very little sleep.”
Sinn Féin councillor Catherine Nelson said people were “genuinely frightened” [BBC]
Sinn Féin councillor Catherine Nelson said “people just want to get home”.
“Last night people were incredibly distressed, including young people who were out and about and who were very frightened about getting home, people who were evacuated in the dead of night, in the dark not knowing for how long this will go on.”
Nelson praised the community who gathered to provide support to those who had been evacuated.
“The spirit of Craigavon, the real face of Craigavon is the actions of those who have reacted to this in this manner. Those who are involved who are responsible – they’ve no place in this community.
“People were genuinely frightened, this isn’t the norm. There’s children who went to school this morning with no uniform, no breakfast, haven’t slept in a bed last night, that’s not wanted,” Nelson said.
