When Overland Park Police Officer Mike Mosher was killed in May 2020, his family was left with grief. Mosher, who was off duty, confronted a hit-and-run suspect near 123rd Street and Antioch. The encounter turned into a deadly shootout. Mosher and the suspect, Phillip Carney, both died. Frank Donchez, then Overland Park’s police chief, said Mosher embodied the calling of law enforcement. “Mike jumped right in and confronted the hit-and-run offender. Ultimately, it cost him his life. But that’s what we do. We run towards danger when others run away,” Donchez said.
