When a car crashed into the Family Dollar store in the 3700 block of Broadway Boulevard nearly a decade ago, it destroyed a support beam holding up the building’s Northeast corner and roof. But the property owner never applied for a permit to repair the beam or shore up the roof where hundreds of people walked underneath every week, KMBC 9 Investigates has confirmed through a city spokeswoman and a review of city records. Sunday, that roof collapsed, killing 68-year-old Larry Banks, critically injuring a 50-year-old woman, and injuring two others.
