Lewis Pullman shades ‘Star Wars’ on ‘The View’ after revealing he saw it for the first time after ‘Spaceballs’: “Why did they remake ‘Spaceballs’ without the jokes?”

Actor Lewis Pullman, son of Bill Pullman, opened up on The View about his experience going from watching his father’s sci-fi comedy Spaceballs as a kid to starring alongside his father in the highly anticipated sequel, Spaceballs 2.
Lewis explained, “There was only so many of my dad’s movies I was allowed to watch growing up and that was one.”
The 1987 film starring Bill, Rick Moranis and Daphne Zuniga is a sci-fi parody spoofing Star Wars and other sci-fi classics of that time, including Star Trek and 2001: A Space Odyssey. On The View, Lewis revealed that he actually watched Spaceballs before seeing the original Star Wars trilogy, prompting a bit of confusion in the Pullman household.
“I remember finally seeing Star Wars and I was like, ‘Why did they remake Spaceballs without any of the jokes?’” he said, prompting a laugh from the audience. “I didn’t even know what Star Wars was.”
Lewis added that Spaceballs was the movie that “really launched” his father’s career, so Spaceballs 2 felt like “sacred grounds.”

But Lewis spoke highly of the new installment. After revealing that they recently wrapped production on Spaceballs 2, Lewis said, “The writing is so smart and so dumb at the same time, in the best way. It’s like so intelligently designed in the most stupid, possible way.”
He added, “It was so much fun and so fun to work with my dad.”
Moranis and Zuniga will be reprising their roles for the film, alongside newcomers Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Anthony Carrigan and George Wyner.
Lewis also opened up about his experience working with director and writer Mel Brooks, who helped co-write and launch the sequel.
The Thunderbolts actor revealed that he didn’t get a chance to meet Brooks in person, but they did connect ahead of the film.
“Mel didn’t come out. He’s a homebody but he was definitely a part of it, his spirit was there. And he was part of the design of it, he was the one who launched us,” Lewis said. “I still haven’t met him, but when he sent me the role, he sent me a voice note. I couldn’t believe it… I wish you could frame a voice note.”
Spaceballs 2 is estimated to premiere in theaters in 2027.
