The Alex Pretti shooting: Letters to the Editor — Jan. 27, 2026

The Issue: An ICE agent fatally shooting Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse and armed protester in Minneapolis.

Alex Pretti was a good man (“ICE kills activist at bust,” Jan. 25).

As an ICU nurse, he devoted himself to essential, benevolent work.

He believed he could change the law by showing up to a protest with a gun; yet he had already influenced the law by likely voting for leaders whose leniency opened the door to fraud, looting, vandalism and anti-law disorder. He didn’t need to be belligerent or bring a weapon to a so-called “peaceful protest.”

What truly shapes society is a commitment to a work ethic, which he had, and a respect for all people and for the law, which, unfortunately, he did not.

Just when a roiling, fraying nation most needs humane, caring and compassionate Americans like Renee Good and Alex Pretti, their lives are brutally ended by lawless law enforcement at the behest of the most corrupt, incompetent and deceitful president in United States history.

Democrats’ hypocrisy is maddening. They fan the flames by saying ICE is raiding schools and churches but can’t name one person who has been removed from a school.

Yet they have no problem when an angry mob invades a church or someone attends a “peaceful protest” with a gun.

The murder of Pretti by masked ICE agents is horrifying. In this national crisis, clarity and truth matter.

First the facts: Pretti was legally carrying a holstered firearm. Masked agents knocked him down, seized his gun and executed him.

Deputy White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller called Pretti a terrorist, while masked federal agents are the ones terrorizing Minnesotans. Stephen Miller speaks of an “invasion.” However, it’s the masked agents who have invaded Minnesota at the federal government’s behest.

Now is a critical time for all of us, including media organizations, to stand up and repeat the truth.

Although Pretti’s death was tragic, pay no attention to the men behind the curtain — Gov. Tim Walz and Mayor Jacob Frey — feigning outrage over ICE’s presence. This is merely a diversion, so the Trump administration looks the other way from the Somali fraud and kickbacks.

ICE is not to blame for Pretti’s death. There is no reason to bring a gun to a protest, unless you’re looking for trouble.

It’s a shame what happened, but it is what it is.

The Issue: JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon criticizing President Trump’s 10% credit-card cap.

Jamie Dimon is claiming disaster looms following proposals to cap credit-card interest rates at 10%. This is complete nonsense (“10% card cap a ‘disaster,’ ” Jan. 22).

People still need access to credit. The solution is simple; keep the credit lines and charge the capped interest rate.

Lower rates would help consumers, not hurt them, yet Dimon frames it as a catastrophe, protecting profits over people. This is a perfect example of a corporate leader putting self-interest above logic and fairness.

Tom Cooney

Dimon chastises President Trump for suggesting a 10% cap on credit-card rates, so I guess he supports the 30% rates that most Mastercard or Visa cards charge.

Maybe Dimon grew up in an inner city where many residents used loan sharks for money to pay bills or gambling debts, and wants to legitimize the banks taking over the loan-shark businesses.
