Californians have been suffering excruciating pain at the pump while long enduring some the highest gas prices in the nation.
The average price of a gallon of regular gas in the Golden State reached $5.483 on Saturday, nearly 40 cents more than a week ago and more than 90 cents higher than a month prior, according to the American Automobile Association.
The war in Iran has has only compounded sky-high prices in the state, where drivers already pay a “California premium” loaded with higher-than average state excise and sales taxes, as well hefty fees for climate programs unique to the state.
But for drivers willing to get creative, relief can be found at some stations — if they know where to look.
The Los Angeles area
While Los Angeles doesn’t have the most expensive gas on average in California, it does hold some of the more outrageous prices.
Last weekend, a downtown LA Chevron station was selling gas for an eye-popping at $8.21 a gallon, with one driver spending $107 to fill up.
For more affordable prices, motorists need to head to the Burbank/Glendale area or toward Orange County.
These are cheapest gas stations in the LA area, according to crowd-sourced site GasBuddy.
- $4.29 per gallon, G&M at 2501 W. Olive Ave. in Burbank
- $4.59 per gallon, Shell at 7280 Rosemead Blvd. in San Gabriel
- $4.69 per gallon, Speedway Express at 20055 Vanowen St. in Winnetka
The San Diego area
San Diegans don’t have to travel quite as far as drivers in other California cities to find the most affordable options.
Most of the area’s cheap gas is available in the eastern San Diego County cities of La Mesa and El Cajon.
- $4.59, Speedway & Shell at 7594 University Ave in La Mesa
- $4.69, Sycuan Market at 4915 Dehesa Rd. in El Cajon
- $4.77, Highway Fuel at 596 N. Mollison Ave. in El Cajon
The Bay Area
All of the cheapest gas lies beyond San Francisco’s city limits, mostly clustered in Fremont and Hayward.
Very few gas stations price below $5 per gallon in the Bay Area, which has the most expensive gas prices in the state.
San Rafael, Napa and San Francisco counties, the most expensive counties for gas in the state, all sit around $5.66 per gallon.
Here are the three cheapest stations in the Bay Area:
- $4.69, Arco at 5012 Stevenson Blvd. in Fremont
- $4.79, Star Gas at 43411 Grimmer Blvd. in Fremont
- $4.79, 43250 Grimmer Blvd. in Fremont
Motorists can find even cheaper fuel by heading north to Redding, where two stations were reported to be selling a gallon for $3.99, making it the cheapest in the state, according to GasBuddy.
